Weekly Bulletin November 6, 2016

Queries for Eleventh Month (November) on Nonviolence

  • Are we working to increase our understanding and use of nonviolent action?
  • How well do we apply nonviolence to the settlement of disputes? What are we doing to encourage the use of nonviolent means to settle national and international differences?
  • Are we learning to channel our anger, fear and frustration in healthy, creative and peaceable ways?
  • Do we teach our children how to meet aggression creatively and without violence?
  • In our commitment to nonviolence, are we sensitive to the differing claims of the sanctity of life and the quality of life in situations such as unwanted pregnancy or the artificial prolongation of life?

Friends are reminded that the deadline for submission to the Bulletin is Wednesday at noon. Thank you. Please submit items for the bulletin to the clerks at this address: pfmclerks@gmail.com

Upcoming Events and Announcements

PA Network Against Torture invites you to a viewing and conversation  of Ava DuVernay’s documentary 13th  at Pittsburgh Friends Meeting House on November 17th at 7 P.M. “Ava DuVernay’s 13th is a documentary about how the Thirteenth Amendment led to mass incarceration in the United States, but it’s also a gorgeous, evocative, and maddening exploration of words: of their power, their roots, their permanence. It’s about those who wield those words and those made to kneel by them.” (The Atlantic, Oct 6th)

Saturday, November 19th, noon to 4 p.m.: It’s time for our fall Work Party! Please join the House Committee and other F/friends to help spruce up the house and grounds for the winter months. There will be plenty to do, both inside and out. A light lunch will magically appear around 1 p.m. Check with our House Manager, Tim Field, if you want to sign up for a particular job ahead of time. Come for an hour or the afternoon, work, have fun, and feel good! Your meetinghouse will thank you.

Saturday Salon Rescheduled: December 17, 7pm in the parlor. This “Evening of Shared Creative Expression” will feature readings by Claire Cohen and Barra Jacob-McDowell. Anyone interested in sharing their poetry, prose, music, or other artistic expression in the Open Mic portion, please contact Coordinator Barra Jacob-McDowell, 412-389-3910 or barrabard@comcast.net. Donations requested: Stamps  (or stamp money) for letters in support of peace and social concerns.

Friendly Interest Groups (FIGS): Our Friendly Interest Groups are now forming for the winter and spring. Sign-up sheets will be posted in the parlor of Meeting House beginning this first day. If you would like to form a new group, please use a form on the table in the parlor, or email Jim Morgan (morganjj@gmail.com) for a copy of the form. In the past groups have been formed around singing, dining, excursions, etc. Continuing groups looking for more members include the harmony group, the healthy eating group, and a monthly Oakland lunch group.

The Library Committee wishes to sponsor a Friendly Writers’ Group in prose and poetry. We hope to meet monthly in the library for two hours, on a weekday afternoon or evening. Please contact Barra Jacob-McDowell at barrabard@comcast.net or 412-389-3910 to sign up.
