Queries for Eighth Month (August) on Vocations
● Do we perform our work guided by the Light within?
● In following our vocations do we contribute to the well being of the larger community? Does our work reflect Friends’ testimonies of honesty, equality, peace, and simplicity?
● Do we conduct our business affairs so that all parties are treated fairly?
● Do we have respect for all honest work, paid or unpaid, whether at home or in the community?
● Are we open to helping individuals who are making vocational decisions?

Friends are reminded that the deadline for submission to the Bulletin is Wednesday at noon.
Thank you. Please submit to the clerks at this address: pfmclerks

Message from the Clerks—In the Spirit of Love: During this political season, please bear in mind that Friends and Attenders are of many minds about the issues that confront our nation and that Meeting for Worship is not a political forum. We understand that passions are running high, and the Spirit may move us to speak about the concerns of the day. To quote the disciple Paul, “The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control” (Galatians 5:22-23). Let us speak from the Light we are given to the Light in others under the guidance of this Spirit.

Invitation from the Clerks: Each week, Pittsburgh Friends Meeting closes worship with a reading of the monthly Queries, which serve as a guide to us as we live out our faith in our daily lives. Recently, events in our nation have caused many Friends to consider the role of attitudes towards race, ethnicity, and bigotry that inform our culture and its institutions. In PFM, both members and regular attenders are increasingly uncomfortable with this status quo and are asking how to become more active in fighting this blight on our world. Please consider joining a newly formed “working group” that will meet to discuss and develop Queries and Practices that allow us as Friends to be more actively aware of AND actively engaged in resisting and eliminating the harmful effects of racism in our Religious Society and our civil communities. (Please note: these Queries will not replace our existing Queries, nor will they “compete” with them.) Participation in this group is open to all Friends and Attenders of Pittsburgh Meeting. For more information, contact Mary Parish, Gina Godfrey, or Kathy Hollingshead, or email pfmclerks@gmail.com.

What does belonging really look like, and how do we put it into practice? At Fall Gathering (9/16/16-9/18/16) we will weave the fabric of trust and community and gain a deeper understanding of each other toward the goal of Seeing, Knowing, Caring, and Growing through games, worship, outdoor activities, bonfires, a talent show, and playing joyfully together. Rooms in Scott lodge are limited and will be assigned on a first-come first-served basis so register early at tinyurl.com/FG16reg Scholarships are available for Young Friends attending the gathering and Cari Burke plans to make this an engaging and meaningful gathering for all our young Friends! Pick up a brochure with the schedule and other pertinent information at Meeting! Or check it out on the PFM website:

The Library Committee wishes to sponsor a Friendly Writers’ Group in prose and poetry. We hope to meet monthly in the library for two hours, on a weekday afternoon or evening. Please contact Barra Jacob-McDowell at barrabard@comcast.net or 412-389-3910 to sign up.

Typists needed! Summer months mean spottier schedules. Are you interested in being one of the typists that captures ministry and announcements during Meeting for Worship? If so, please contact Susan for more information: susanloucks@gmail.com

Child Care is looking for volunteers to work with our amazing children this summer! For more information, please see or email Anya Moon (anyaemoon@gmail.com) or Mary Beth Steisslinger (mbsteisslinger@gmail.com). While PA now requires all volunteers working with children to obtain a criminal background check, this is free and easy to do! All the required forms are also attached to the email circulating the bulletin. Paper copies of these forms are available at the Meeting House. You can see Kathie Hollingshead (hollingsheadks@gmail.com) for further instructions or assistance. Yes, we can walk you through this process right at the meetinghouse if you prefer!

Get the weekly e-bulletin! To get the bulletin or newsletter by email, please send a request to ericwilliamstarbuck@gmail.com. Eric will invite you to join the right PFM Google group. To get a listing in the Meeting Directory (both print and e-versions — the e-directory publishes more often) fill out a Green Card that sits in the parlor on a coffee can in the opposite corner from the piano.

Library Committee: Once again, the Sunday morning parlor display is on summer vacation! But “Reading for a Rainy Day” books are displayed on the library mantel. This selection will be updated as summer goes on—especially if Friends borrow these books! Borrowing instructions are posted on the mantel and on the library desk.
