bulletin 8-11-15

Religious Society of Friends of Pittsburgh

4836 Ellsworth Ave., Pittsburgh, PA 15213
Weekly Bulletin: September 13, 2015

Queries for Nine Month (September on Children)
● Do we respect the dignity of our children?
● Are we helping our children to recognize and respond to the Light in themselves and others?
● How do our lives exemplify peace and caring? Do we encourage children to live simply, nonviolently, and with a concern for others, despite temptations from peers, the media, and society?
● Do we listen to our children so that they learn to value their inner life and strength? Do we continue to love and support them when their actions hurt or grieve us?
● Are we involved in the support, care, and religious education of the Meeting’s children? In the First Day School, are we teaching them about the history and practices of Friends and the application of Friends’ beliefs to everyday life? Do we teach them about the Bible and about other faiths?
● What are we doing to improve the quality of education in the public 28 schools? In what ways are we seeking to meet other needs of children in our communities?

Announcements and Upcoming Events

Welcome to First Day School! Classes begin Sun., Sept 13th. We will be studying Quaker History and Beliefs this year. Looking forward to seeing you there!

A Community Need: We are in need of an immediate replacement laptop for the meeting room to support the needs of Friends and Attenders who have difficulty hearing spoken ministry and announcements. The laptop requires up-to-date word processing software but no other capabilities. Quietness is important; however we do have a quiet bluetooth keyboard as supplementary equipment. If anyone has either a short-term loaner while we determine needs or a reliable longer term option, please talk to Susan Loucks or Debby Hollingshead.

Saturday Salon: At 7 pm Saturday, October 3, the Library Committee will again offer “An Evening of Shared Creative Expression” in the parlor. Featured will be storyteller Barra the Bard (Barra Jacob-McDowell) and the Harmony Singers (of Sunday morning fame). The second half of the program will be “Open Mic.” In cooperation with Peace & Social Concerns Committee, donations of stamps, non-perishable food items, or warm hats, gloves, or scarves are requested. For more information, including participation in Open Mic, see the flyers available on the table in the parlor, or contact Nancy James.

TORTURE BY ANY OTHER NAME…Solitary Confinement: The Immoral Treatment of Prisoners in America’s Prison System October 3rd 6:00pm at East Liberty Presbyterian Church. Refreshments followed by a talk by Ron Stief, Executive Director of the National Religious Campaign Against Torture and Shandre Delaney whose son Carrington Keys was held in solitary for over 9 years.
