Today, April 10, was a national day of action calling for fair comprehensive immigration legislation. For over six months AFSC PA has been trying to get an immigration task force reinstated in Pittsburgh. PA Interfaith Impact Network task force dissolved over a year ago. So we were very pleased when SEIU and One Pittsburgh together with PIIN decided to take up this work. AFSC is now a part of a strong coalition in the city working on comprehensive immigration reform. On April 10 a Will of the Council Proclamation was read into our City of Pittsburgh records acknowledging the contribution of immigrants and calling for legalization of all undocumented in our country. The proclamation will be sent out to our Governor and legislators.
Over 125 people attended the reading with a number of people speaking passionately on the issue. One young Mexican mother with her baby in her arms told the story of her husband being taken away and put in detention. She told how her young son had just talked to his Dad about their plans for the weekend and how they would spend it together when ICE arrived and arrested the father. The boy is now in deep depression and unable to function well. This is just one story out of many. We are fortunate that Senator Casey and Representative Doyle are firmly behind immigration reform. However Senator Toomey is still considering his stand. We believe that it is possible that he could come out in support if he hears from enough people in Pennsylvania. Please take a moment to write to him
