The January 2012 draft of the Lake Erie Yearly Meeting (LEYM) Advices & Queries is available for review. Ministry Committee may be asking some committees to review and respond to certain sec-tions, but individual responses and suggestions are also welcome until the March 31, 2012 LEYM Representative Meeting. They may be sent to Thomas Taylor, A&Q, Ad hoc Committee clerk.
The files are found on LEYM’s home page, in the upper left corner. http://leym.org.
The materials also provide an historical overview of the use of Advices and Queries through Quaker history, with an account of their use by LEYM and the development of the draft document.

Windows and Mirrors: Reflections on the War in Afghanistan
Gallery at 937 Liberty Ave (second floor), January 27 – February 12, 2012.
We are very excited about helping to bring this exhibit to Pitts-burgh and hope many Meeting folks will attend one or more of the events. Please talk to any of us (Scilla, Elise, Marcy, Mary and Jo) about this project or check out the website. www.windowsandmirrors.org.
Windows and Mirrors is a stunning exhibit of 45 murals from artists across the U.S., shown alongside drawings collected from Afghan high school students about their daily lives. Each panel is a window into the realities of war in Afghanistan—the horror and despair, and the hope and resilience of the Afghan people. The art is also a mirror that reflects back to each viewer their own feelings about being a citizen of a nation at war. Sponsored by AFSC.
The Pittsburgh exhibit also showcases the War Dialogues Project, in which refugees and military veterans of the same wars collaborate through art and storytelling to promote healing and under-standing. This project represents a conversation between two local artists: Joyce Wagner, a US Iraq veteran, and Mina Al Doori, a high-school Iraqi refugee. Sponsored by the Sprout Fund.

Gallery hours:
Wed and Thurs 11:00 am – 6:00 pm
Friday and Sat 11:00 am – 8:00 pm
Sunday 11:00 am – 5:00 pm

Schedule of Events
• January 27, 5:00-8:00 pm: Exhibit opens as part of the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust Gallery Crawl
• January 29, 1:30 pm: Disarming Words. Gallery talk and Iraqi poems at the Out of Rubble exhibit at SPACE gallery, followed by a singing escort by the Raging Grannies to Windows and Mirrors and readings of translated Iraqi public poetry and poetry by war veterans, with gallery discussion.
• February 4, 6:00-9:00 pm: Women and War: Women and Peace presents testimonies by women of the impact of war and their search for peace. The evening concludes with an improvisational performance by Pittsburgh Playback Theatre and a chance for the audience to reflect on the exhibit and the stories through the creativity of the Playback actors.
• February 11, 3:00 pm: Lessons Learned From Iraq. Peter Lems, American Friends Service Committee Program Director for Iraq and Afghanistan, discusses the impact of the troop withdrawal from Iraq, our responsibilities, and lessons learned for the peace movement. How can we use these lessons to speed up the re-moval of US troops and bases from Afghanistan?
EAARTH: MAKING A LIFE ON A TOUGH NEW PLANET by Bill McKibben. Reviewed by Nicholas Suarez
Eaarth (yes, the title is Eaarth, not Earth) by Bill McKibben is a book describing the new world that humanity has created through climate change and how we could survive in this bleak new world, where the icecaps have almost completely disappeared and brutal storms are commonplace.
The first chapter of the book gives a broad overview of the ef-fects of climate change and how those effects will harm many organisms, humans included. If you have not read much on cli-mate change, this chapter will be a real eye-opener and will most likely be slightly shocking, which is probably what the author intended. He portrays a very grim future for Earth and points out a number of ways in which the CO2 (carbon dioxide) we have pumped into the atmosphere is already causing great harm to our world.
In the second chapter of Eaarth, McKibben writes about how the current environmental crisis came to be, highlighting the inactivi-ty of a number of politicians in the United States and other in-fluential countries. He also writes more in depth about the ef-fects of climate change, especially how it affects people living in third world countries.
After talking about how climate change is negatively altering our world, the author shifts the focus in the last two chapters of his book to how it is possible to survive the current environmental crisis and prevent further crises from happening. In those last two chapters, he suggests that we should no longer focus on expansion, and rather than finding more sustainable ways to continue progress, we should focus on creating a more durable economy that keeps our civilization working stably rather than rapidly expanding it.
In all, Eaarth is a very interesting and informative book. The first two chapters are about the current crisis, and the second half of the book provides a unique environmental viewpoint.
